Llandrindod Wells was originally a very small, quiet village. After the Mid-Wales railway line was opened in 1865, the town's mineral springs attracted tourists and it became a popular spa resort. The village rapidly expanded into a small town, with shops, large hotels, and civic buildings, all built in the Victorian style that still gives the town its character today. It was during this boom period, in the 1890s?, that 'Llandrindod Wells Temperance Band' was formed to play at public functions, and to entertain both locals and tourists.
Around 1950 the band was disbanded due to the war effort, and reformed in 1969 as 'Llandrindod Wells Silver Band' under the leadership of local men Bert Morgan and Tony Gough.
The town has capitalised on its history as a health resort, and the spa is now only a small part of it. The Victorian architecture, charming hotels, conference centre, beautiful scenery, and outdoor festivals attract visitors from all over the world.
The band exists (as it always has) purely on the voluntary talents of its members. Bert Morgan's son Darcy continues to be influential, playing solo cornet and organising the engagements. The Junior Band was formed in the early 1990s under the tutelage of Maureen Conway. The numbers fluctuate as players come and go, and both bands are quite small at present, so new players are very welcome.

From the A4081, continue past the 30mph signs for about 100 yards, and as the road rises, the Albert Hall Theatre is on the right. Or from the A483, turn uphill onto Spa Road (one-way), past a small park on the right, bear left, and the road dips sharply downhill to a roundabout; take the 2nd exit, and after a short distance, the Albert Hall Theatre is on the left.
The Theatre is an olde Victorian building with a flight of steps at the front. Car Parking is free, next to it. Bicycles can be brought inside. The school room is through a green wooden door on the side of the building.
Vacancies in all sections. The band can usually provide an instrument. Photo courtesy of Ernie Husson, Marina Gallery, Llandrindod Wells |
